Open Pedagogy Toolkit: Module 2
Discovering Core Values & Creating Learning Outcomes
In this module, you will explore your core teaching values and how they connect with elements of Open Pedagogy. Making these connections explicit will enable you to update your learning outcomes to reflect both your disciplinary goals–that is, what you want students to be able to do, know, or appreciate–and Open Pedagogical principles that can support learning. This module helps you identify what matters most to you and how Open Pedagogy can help you realize those values more fully. This module is largely activity-based. You will engage in 3 sequenced activities to help progressively discover your core values and revise a learning outcome. Before we dive in, consider responding to the reflection prompt to get you thinking generally about what teaching means to you.
Reflection
Think about why you teach. Can you recall a recent time when your teaching felt most meaningful or impactful? What was it about that situation that resonated with you as an educator?
Learning Objectives
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Articulate your teaching values and explain how these values relate to the principles of open pedagogy.
- Analyze the alignment between open pedagogy and your course goals, identifying specific opportunities to enhance student agency and collaboration.
- Draft or revise a course learning outcome that reflects both your disciplinary goals and open pedagogical values.
