When you prepare your dissertation\/thesis, you are both an author and copyright holder of the original work as well as a user of other people’s copyrighted works.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Third Party Content in Dissertations<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

When you use other people’s works or incorporate third party content into your work, your use must be authorized under the fair use<\/a> exception or permission<\/a> has been granted for the use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purdue graduate students are required to submit their dissertation to the Graduate School\u2019s open access repository called HammerRR<\/a>. Unless the author of the dissertation chooses to have an embargo, then the dissertation is publically and freely available to the world. It is important that any content not created by the author of the dissertation which is known as \u201cthird party content\u201d is used in accordance with the fair use exception or with permission from the copyright holder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A chapter in your dissertation been previously published as a journal article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many publishers who are willing to negotiate the publishing agreement. Determine what terms of the agreement are amenable to you and which are not and then negotiate for the terms you will be able to abide by. Always keep in mind the outcomes that you need as a scholar. In the end only you can make the decision as to whether or not to sign the agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Issue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are third party images included in your dissertation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you determine that the use is not fair use then send a request in writing to the copyright holder to ask for permission to use the image in your dissertation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hot Tip:<\/strong> Use works that are in the public domain<\/a> or find images that have Creative Commons licenses that would allow your use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
